Super Deluxe Clambake: Outdoor Entertaining Ideas For Spring

by Michael Chapman

Clambakes have been around for hundreds of years. They were first introduced by Native Americans in the New England area. They are now known to us as New England Clambakes. Now that spring is here it is a great time to have a clambake to celebrate with friends and family.

Originally, Native Americans would have their clambakes outside, cooking the food in a pit. The pit was dug, then lined with stones. To create the heat needed to cook fresh seafood, a large fire was lit in the pit, on top of the stones, so the stones could absorb the heat. The clams were then layered on to the hot stones in the pit, followed by potatoes, and lobsters. Between each layer was a layer of fresh seaweed. On top if all went a layer of corn husks to keep the heat in, baking the food.

Fresh shellfish can be ordered from a variety of locations. There are two ordering alternatives for you for your nutritious and festive clam bake. You can request the standard clambake, which has lobster, clams, chowder and also includes supplies. Or go for something called a super deluxe clambake, which has everything the standard clambake includes plus mussels and/or shrimp, or other fresh shellfish.

People who want a true clambake will often, if the gathering is large enough, choose to have a super deluxe clambake. This has added shellfish, which appeals to a more diverse group of guests, and feeds more people. This way every guest can enjoy some aspect of the clambake.

Today, modern cooking methods have replaced the old fashion clambake. Now, clambakes are cooked on the stove, or outside on the grill. If you have a fire pit, that is a great place to cook your clambake. Clambakes are a wonderful way to throw an outdoor party, and are extra fun while camping. As an added bonus, outside cooking means minimal clean up!

Fresh food, as we all know, is much healthier than processed food, so a healthy atmosphere for you and your party is ensured with a clambake. Since shellfish and other seafood are so very healthy, it also benefits by being fresh. We should remember that clambakes are healthy for us as well as being the epitome of fun and atmosphere.

A healthy alternative that would be good for friends or family in spring are Classic American Clambakes. One should know that the idea behind clambake is positive to intrigue many guests and will be the beginning of many new conversations in the midst of a party.
