What Are The Advantages Of Eating Dinner Together?

by Susanne Myers

The nightly dinner used to be a family affair that would bring everyone around the table for some good food and conversations. Dinner was when the whole family would meet and share a meal and be together. Our busy lives these days make it much more difficult to get everyone around the dinner table on a regular basis. This doesn't mean that we shouldn't do our best to keep dinner a regular occurrence. Sharing this meal together as quite a few benefits you may not be aware of.

Dinner is a great time to take an interest in your child's life. Encourage everyone to share something about their day while you eat. If you stay involved in your child's life, you will notice much earlier if something is wrong with your child or if she is starting to behave oddly.

Your chances of raising a responsible young adult will improve when you know what is happening in your kid's life. By showing your kids that you care, they have a better chance to never start smoking or drink underage. If you have a daughter, she will also be less likely to start having sex at an early age, which will in turn avoid sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy.

Of course dinner is also all about food. If you take the time to prepare dinner, your family will eat much healthier than if you stop for takeout or just have everyone grab some junk food. We all know that there are quite a few health problems from fast food, including obesity, diabetes and heart disease. A balanced diet with home-cooked meals can easily prevent this.

Your family dinner should include a good source of protein like chicken breast, seafood or lean beef. Include a starchy side that includes at least some sort of whole grain like whole wheat pasta or brown rice. Adding more fruits and vegetables to your families diet is one of the best things you can do for their health. Always serve a salad along with one more vegetable side for dinner and add an extra serving of fruit to dessert.

Cooking dinner doesn't have to be a big production. Many of us work all day and want to be able to get dinner on the table without too much work. One of the best ways to accomplish this is to use a meal planning worksheet. Sit down once a week and figure out what you are going to fix for dinner each day. Note it on the worksheet, then make out your grocery list and shop for all of it at once. Or if you prefer, use a service like the Healthy Menu Mailer and let them do the meal planning for you.
