Why You Need A Domain Name - How To Choose, Use, Buy, And Manage Them

by Dan Farrell

Making sure you have an excellent domain name is very important for all entrepreneurs. It affects many parts of your business and should be considered with care as to what name you choose. Consider carefully what domain name you will use. It should be one that anyone can completely identify with the business you are carrying on. It isn't easy to change once you purchase one, so think carefully. The domain name has two particular goals:

- It brands your business

- Helps to achieve search engine optimization

Brand your business: Before you choose your domain name keep in mind that it will be the name that represents your enterprise. Because of this it must sound good and be professional. This will be the name that all your customers and prospects will recognize your business by. Keep the following in mind when picking your domain name:

- Make it memorable: It should be a name that people can remember easily. They can therefore spread word-of-mouth about your site.

- Make it short and easy to spell: The shorter and least complicated it is the better. They will be able to spell it easier and remember it into the future.

- It should describe your business and what you do. When people look at your domain name they should know exactly how you can help them and what you are selling.

- Your domain name is your business name: because of this fact it is extremely hard to change so it is critical for your business to get this right the 1st time.

Optimizing your website: Try to include your keyword or key phrase within your domain name. This helps position you better in the search engines and make your website easy to find.

Registering your domain name:

- Make a list of domain names: Using your keywords, list out some domain names you would like. List out at least five or ten names, because you will find others have already used some of your ideas.

- Go to a domain register and get your domain name registered. You can use .com or .net or .org as the suffix. And here are some terms you need to know: o Nameserver: this is referring to the host's server. If you insert the host's DNS or server code when you register, you will ensure your website and domain name will be found for registration, and thus your website will be published effectively for the world to see on the World Wide Web. o Whois contact info on your website. You can make this either public or private information. When making it public, everyone can access it, so don't put too much personal information.

Some important things to remember:

o The longer term you register for, the more credible Google will see your site to be, so you will move up in the ranks. Try to register for two or even five years.

o So no one can tamper with the domain name or transfer to another service
