Designing A Money-Making Web Site
Being in control of your website is very important for your business. A website is never set in stone and will always need some changes, even if it is just loading new content. There are so many things that need to be tweaked on a website and it is necessary to be able to make changes and additions as soon as you can.
When you rely on someone else to control your site and make changes for you, you can have delays and mistakes take place. This can cost you sales and lost income. When your web designer gets busy and distracted, doesn't get your changes done in time, it is a problem. Your special campaigns for sales won't get revised when needed and this can cut across your business.
So what does it involve when you want to be a Webmaster and stay in command of your site?
1. Have a good word processor like Microsoft word. This is an invaluable tool even when you are not using it for your website.
2. Something simple to use to upload to your site is an FTP program. It's easy to learn. You will need one if your web host doesn't have this feature for you.
3. Have an HTML editor that allows you to just copy and paste from your word processor, without too much knowledge of HTML. Dreamweaver and Front page are among the leading HTML editors and are fairly simple to use.
4. There are many places on the web where you can find templates for your site. Your editor should have some, but you can get them elsewhere for almost nothing or free.
5. At times you will want to add graphics to your site, but this is a bit more advanced. Try and avoid using graphics until you can get a photo editor for this, like Photo Shop.
Any software programs you use should have technical support, good customer service and plenty of tutorials to help you get going. Lots of information is on the Internet, as well. And a lot of it is free.
Building your own website is fun but can be challenging. It's being in control of your online business. Don't get too complex in your site, but approach things step by step until you get the feel for it. There are many books, audio programs and such that you can study to educate yourself. It is wise to start with a simple marketing site to begin with, then work up to a theme content website. After you master the elementary steps needed for these websites you can go on to learn different techniques and build more complex websites.
Look at your business needs and tailor your website for them. Try to bring unique features, even if you use a template, and be the proud Webmaster of your own website. There is nothing like the satisfaction of being in complete control of your business by learning a little about building websites.
