Audio Cassettes: Nostalgia Keeps Them Alive

by Menachem Green

One of the biggest steps in the lives of any young child in the eighties or early nineties was what their first audio cassette was. Many of the younger generations could answer the same question, but most likely they would answer with a CD or MP3. There are few of us who remember the days before the CD.

Invention of audiocassettes opened the door for a new world of music. Now, we are in a position to take our music from our homes with a lot of mobility and use it in our cars and even while walking. This has started a sort of a music revolution and we are able to enjoy the music without risking the same damages we had discovered with vinyl.

Use of audiocassettes in place of Gramophone records made from vinyl has improved the handling capability. However, cassette tapes have their own shortcomings. The ribbon in the cassette is delicate and gets twisted and tangled which results in the end of your favorite tape. The audio cassettes have withstood a lot more abuse than old vinyl records they are likely to be overrun by the CD.

Many of us have wonderful memories of audio cassettes that we used to listen to long ago. Everyone that ever had tapes, always had one or two favorites. Ones they would listen to over and over. Special tapes that they or a friend had made. Tapes that you knew by heart. Audio tapes were a wonderful way to take your favorite music with you and share it with others.

For several years, audio cassettes and CDs managed to coexist. CDs were consistently more expensive, but their higher sound quality and other features made them worth the extra expense. You couldn't skip around easily on an audio cassette the way you could on a CD. You could listen to just one or two songs on an album if you wanted. Eventually, the better function of the CD killed the audio cassette.

The music technology has been evolving over a period of time and changes have taken place in recording and storage devices. Whatever be the developments, one cannot forget the role of the audiocassette in this. With the introduction of CD the audiocassette has lost its former glory. However, it still exists after lasting for a long time and will be close to the hearts of those who love it.

Popular audio recording media in the eighties/early nineties was audio cassettes. This facilitated a new kind of musical experience, wherein one can take music to your car/workplace/walk without getting damaged. Audiocassette has improved the handling capability but still the tape gets twisted/tangled with loss of favorite music. Discussions with friends indicate that TDK audio cassette was used for recording lullabies for child, mix tapes etc. The cassettes and CDs have coexisted. The CDs are expensive but has better functionality and random access wherein one can select a particular song and hence has displaced the tapes. Cassette tapes, a milestone in audio Technology development will be remembered fondly.
